The City Museum of Natural History in Bradford Hill will stay open late every Friday this summer, as part of a plan to attract younger visitors who are usually at work or school during the day.
From the first Friday in June until the end of August, the museum will remain open until 10 p.m. instead of closing at 5 p.m. as usual. Entry to the main galleries will remain free, but there will be a charge of £5 for the evening activities, which include guided torch-lit tours of the dinosaur hall, talks by scientists and live music in the main hall.
The museum's director, Dr Priya Nair, said that visitor numbers had been falling among people aged between eighteen and thirty-five. "Many young adults tell us they would love to come, but they simply can't during our normal opening hours," she said. "We also want to show that a museum can be a relaxed and social place, not just somewhere for school trips."
Each Friday evening will have a different theme. The first will focus on space, with telescopes set up on the museum's roof so that visitors can look at the moon and planets if the sky is clear. Later themes include deep-sea creatures, ancient Egypt and the science of food.
A café and bar will be open in the main hall, and visitors will be allowed to take drinks into some, but not all, of the galleries. Children under sixteen can attend only with an adult.
Similar late openings at other museums have been very successful. If the summer trial attracts at least 500 visitors each week, the museum plans to continue the Friday evenings throughout the year.
