The popular Saturday farmers' market in the town of Elmwood is moving to a new home. From the first weekend of next month, the market will take place in Victoria Park instead of the car park behind the town hall, where it has been held for the past twelve years.
The organisers say the market has simply grown too big for its old site. When it started, there were just fifteen stalls selling fruit, vegetables and eggs. Today there are more than sixty, including stalls selling cheese, bread, flowers, honey and hot food. On busy days, shoppers have complained that the narrow spaces between stalls were uncomfortably crowded, and some sellers have been on a waiting list for over a year.
The new site has room for up to a hundred stalls, as well as a children's play area and picnic tables. There will also be a covered section, so that the market can continue in bad weather. In the past, it was sometimes cancelled when heavy rain flooded the car park.
Not everyone is pleased. Some older shoppers are worried that the park is further from the bus station, about fifteen minutes on foot compared with five. In response, the organisers have arranged a free minibus that will run between the bus station and the park every twenty minutes on market days.
Parking will also change. Shoppers who come by car will be able to park in the leisure centre car park next to Victoria Park for free until 2 p.m.
The market will keep its usual opening hours, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. To celebrate the move, the first market in the park will feature live music and a cookery demonstration by a local chef.
